February 2014: Tips, eNews and More!

The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games have come and gone and Canadians are still on a high! We were all so excited to cheer for our Canadian athletes as they went for gold. And gold we got!

Go Canada Go!

Are you feeling the chill of the season? We say embrace it and get outside! Ski, skate, or just put on some snow pants and play in the snow! The cold isn't going away anytime soon (despite what some groundhogs may say), so why not enjoy it? Be sure to bundle up and layer yourself well, you don't want to catch a cold.

If you do feel yourself getting sick, be sure to drink plenty of warm fluids and orange juice to load up on vitamin C to help your body stay strong. Some other tips to stay healthy this season include:
  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Throw tissues away after use
  • Get plenty of sleep and good rest
Until next month, stay warm and keep smiling,

Alternative Benefits

How many of you have allowed your dental benefits to dictate your dental treatment? Unfortunately, many of us have answered "yes" to this question, but did you know that it is actually illegal for your insurance company to dictate the course of dental treatment to you?

How do they do this? Let me give you an example. Many patients at one time or another have been told that the best dental treatment for a particular broken down tooth would be an extraction and an implant. The second option would be to extract the tooth and then create a bridge. Many of you look at your dental benefits and realize that you have no coverage for implants but that you do have coverage for the bridge. Therefore, you decide based on your coverage that you will have a bridge rather than an implant, even though the best treatment would be the implant as it does not destroy two adjacent teeth for the bridge.

This is a prime example of the insurance companies dictating treatment by your coverage. In many cases, what you are not told is that there is hidden coverage in your plan for what is known in the industry as alternative coverage. This means that the insurance must give you the same payout for the dental treatment that you choose whether you go with an implant or a bridge.

So in the future, before you let your insurance benefits dictate your next dental treatment, check your benefits carefully or let us help you so that you get the best dental treatment based on your oral health needs and not on your benefits.

Is Your Smile Missing Something?

Are you hesitant to show your teeth when you smile?

Is your smile missing something?

Maybe even a full tooth?

Many people, for one reason or another, have lost a tooth. Reasons range from poor dental hygiene to any variety of accidents. Whatever the reason for the missing tooth we can repair your smile and replace your tooth with a dental implant.

A dental implant is a small prosthetic post that is placed into the bone of the upper or lower jaw. The post functions as the root portion of a lost natural tooth and serves as an anchor for a replacement tooth. An artificial tooth is then attached to the post. Dental implants look and feel exactly like natural teeth - in fact, no one other than you and your dentist will be able to tell the difference.
