Team recommendation "Shoe Dog – A Memoir by the Creator of NIKE", by Phil Knight

Shoe Dog This title was given out at a recent event. It was so well received we thought it should be shared. This is a compelling story behind one of the world's most iconic brands, best known by its ubiquitous "swoosh," recognized the world over. Borrowing $50 from his father, Phil Knight imported high-quality, low-cost athletic footwear from Japan, which he sold from the trunk of his car. In year one, this budding entrepreneur grossed $8,000 in sales. Largely unknown, he collaborated with his brother, early employees and a rag–tag group of misfits, took serious risk and encountered near cataclysmic setbacks to create a global brand with more than $30–billion of annual sales today. Well written and engaging, this is a must read for business enthusiasts, brand loyalists and those who enjoy biographies.

Lois recommends "Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont" by Elizabeth Taylor

Palfrey This is a charming, sharp and witty story that makes for a great summer reading recommendation. The recently widowed Mrs. Palfrey arrives at The Claremont Hotel where she will spend her remaining days. Her co–residents are a collection of eccentric and curious elders who work together to fight boredom and their inevitable fate. Mrs. Burton has a few too many drinks, Mrs. Post always knows what's going on and Mrs. Arbuthnot isn't afraid to share her opinions on just about anything. This is an end of life tale that is at once uncomfortable and real. It reveals the value of friendship, however strange, at any point in life. It is beautifully constructed; character development is brilliant. A thoughtful story about ageing, loneliness and the importance of community; you will enjoy Mrs. Palfrey and her pals.

Originally published in 1971, it was Elizabeth Taylor's 11th novel. She excels in conveying everyday life with humor and poignancy.

Rodney Falconer recommends "Digital Gold: Bitcoin and the Inside Story of the Misfits and Millionaires Trying to Reinvent Money" by Nathaniel Popper

Calculating Investment Performance Over the last 20+ years while I have been at CIBC Wood Gundy there have been a handful of times where something comes into the market that seems to capture everyone's attention. Bitcoin was one of those. My motivation to read digital gold was really to help me get a better understanding of what Bitcoin actually is. Not only did the book help me with this it also took me through the journey of how this currency came to be which I found to be fascinating. My view on Bitcoin has changed from seeing it as a possible Ponzi scheme to seeing it as something that will be part of our economy for many years to come.

Lira recommends "Elevation" by Stephen King

elevation I don't normally read Stephen King novels, but I loved this short novel. Imagine an ordinary man with an extraordinary condition, infinite weight loss. Scott is a 230–pound man who is continuously losing weight but not mass. His appearance remains the same on the outside, but his weight is declining at an alarming rate. With the help of friends, Scott accepts his fate and so begins a moving story about a man accepting his mortality sooner than he expected. A great departure from what this author is known for, "Elevation" is something impossible happening to an otherwise ordinary man.

Meredith recommends "Think Like a Warrior: The Five Inner Beliefs that Make You Unstoppable" (Sports for the Soul Book 1) by Darrin Donnelly

Calculating Investment Performance I was hunting for a book that would help build my mental strength and this one was suggested by a personal trainer. While the main character is fictitious, he is relatable and the lessons he learns from some of history's greatest coaches: John Wooden, Buck O'Neil, Herb Brooks, Paul Bryant and Vince Lombardi, are real. The lessons are simple but effective when you challenge yourself to commit to these inner beliefs.

Focus on what you can control; effort and attitude. Attack each day with joy and enthusiasm. Dream big and ignore the naysayers. Be relentless and never give up on your dreams. Choose faith over fear.

This is a book I can see myself reading over and over again.

Angela recommends "Machines Like Me" by Ian McEwan

Calculating Investment Performance Everyone is talking about AI, 5G and self-driving cars. The future is about all the ways that artificial intelligence is shaping our world.

Charlie, drifting through life and dodging full-time employment, is in love with Miranda, a bright student who lives with a terrible secret. He has spent his inheritance on the acquisition of one of twenty–five highly developed new artificially intelligent robot designed in the early '80s — named Adam. With Miranda's assistance, he co-designs Adam's personality.

McEwan challenges the concept of love and what it means to be human in a rapidly changing world. He does so by exploring the idea of what might happen if a machine begins to understand the human heart...
