We spend so many years building RRSPs, maximizing annual contributions and enjoying the tax-free compounding over a lifetime, but we often leave little time for planning what our optimal exit strategy should be.
The article "Planning Ahead: What's your RRSP Withdrawal Strategy?" on page 3 of our Perspective newsletter outlines some of the key factors that should be considered before RRSP withdrawals begin. For example, it sometimes makes sense to split income with a spouse, withdraw in lower income years, or to consider the timing of withdrawals relative to other income sources.
Most importantly, your individual situation needs to be evaluated and the right strategy must be determined for you. As we review your portfolios, we will recommend appropriate steps that you should consider for your RRSP "exit". It is always best to do this sooner rather than later!
