6th Annual Summer Reads
Summer is in full swing, providing us with plenty of opportunities to relax in the sun with a good book. To celebrate, we're continuing our tradition of sharing reviews of the team's favourite summer reads!
Lois recommends The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion.
Best described as Joan Didion's own cathartic contemplation of loss, I needed to read this book after hearing her speak on CBC. The Year of Magical Thinking, is a memoir of her thoughts, feelings and actions during the year following her husband's unexpected death after 40 years of marriage. I found the lucidity of a woman whose life had changed dramatically, articulated masterfully; the sign of a true professional. Her writing style may come across as flat, but it is rippled effectively with patterns of repetition that create their own kind of drama. "You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends." This is a line she repeats throughout the book. Out of grief and fear comes meaning and reconstruction. A good story to share; I couldn't put it down.

Rodney recommends What it Takes by Charles D. Ellis
This book gives us insights as to what sets the great professional firms apart from all the rest. Having devoted a career that spans fifty years to consulting with and studying professional firms in the Americas, Asia and Europe, author Charles Ellis learned firsthand how difficult it is for an organization to go beyond very good to attain and sustain excellence. Even though the book's focus is on large firms and organizations, there are principles that we as individuals can apply to our lives to make sure we are always at the top of our game.

Lira recommends My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward by Mark Lukach.
"When it is done, we will walk where the road meets the sun." I was really moved by this memoir about Mark and Giulia, a young couple living their dream life in San Francisco. All was well until Giulia, once vibrant and well adjusted suddenly becomes delusional and suffers multiple psychotic breaks over five years, with no clear diagnosis. This book is an honest and heart-wrenching story of mental illness and the power of love. It asks the question: how do we care for the people we love?

Meredith suggests Lion by Saroo Brierley.
I am always drawn to true stories, and this one did not disappoint. Many elements of this story are almost unbearable to think about: the poverty that some families live in, the amount of crime and abuse, and the thousands of children without a family. What resonates with me from this story is the strength shown by Saroo, his family in India and his adoptive family. They are a perfect example of family transcending blood. Each of them showed amazing amounts of determination, patience, acceptance and faith. A wonderful story.
