5th Annual Summer Reads

Summer's a time to relax with a good book. To celebrate we're continuing the tradition of sharing reviews of the team's favourite summer reads!

Lois recommends the Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante.

My recommendation is the Neapolitan Novels, the quartet of books written under the pseudonym of Italian author Elena Ferrante. The fact that her identity is not publicly known, in spite of her success as a novelist, makes me like the books even more.

The books bring to life the friendship, experiences and searing rivalry of two women in Naples, spanning their lifetimes. Using powerful and unconventional narrative about lost texts, alter egos, recurrent symbolism and a large cast of characters, we learn about the history and politics of that time and place. It is a compelling story that grips you from book one all the way through book four. The characters grow old, just as we do.

A perfect summer read from my vantage point!

Rodney recommends Talk Like Ted by Carmine Gallo

TED Talks have redefined the elements of a successful presentation and become the gold standard for public speaking. TED - which stands for technology, entertainment and design - brings together the world's leading innovators and thinkers. Many people have a fear of public speaking or they're insecure about their ability to give a TED-worthy presentation. Talk Like TED will give you the tools to create presentations around the ideas that matter most to you, the skill to win over hearts and minds as well as the confidence to deliver the talk of your life. You have ideas that were meant to be heard. Use your voice to inspire any audience and achieve your most audacious goals.

Lira recommends The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney.

This book is hilarious! This is the story of the troubled and dysfunctional Plumb family and their joint trust fund known as "The Nest" that they are months away from receiving. After an accident threatens their inheritance of "The Nest", they are forced to deal with old resentments and the choices they have made in their lives. A great book to read on the dock at the cottage.

Allessandra recommends We Could be Beautiful by Swan Huntley.

This book is filled with twisted secrets worthy of a summer read! It makes you wonder if you should trust anyone! We Could be Beautiful is a story of a wealthy woman who has everything - from a stunning apartment in Manhattan to a collection of fine art, treating herself to everything she desires except she can't seem to find love. Catherine West finally meets William Stockton who is similar to her and believes he is her missing piece, but as the relationship goes on concerns are raised whether he is indeed being honest. The pages will turn themselves, so my suggestion is to read this novel to discover whether - if - it really can all be beautiful regardless of the outcome! This is a classic page turner, a light summer time read! Enjoy!

Meredith suggests Red Notice by Bill Browder.

Why did I choose this book to share? I prefer true stories to fiction. Russia has always fascinated me because my Dad travelled there regularly on business and returned with so many interesting experiences.

I enjoy stories of intrigue, corruption and conflict and this novel has plenty of those elements.

Divided into two parts, this is a story spanning 25 years and revolves around a Stanford University graduate who becomes an ultra-successful hedge fund manager, travelling to Russia and ultimately becoming a human rights activist. This latter role evolves following the murder of his lawyer and good friend while imprisoned in the Kremlin for uncovering a $230-million fraud committed by Russian officials. Browder himself becomes the subject of a Red Notice, issued to alert countries that a person is wanted, like a warrant to extradite, banning him from Russia.
