Smith Falconer Book Reviews

Lois Smith recommends The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

The Rosie Project has all the attributes of a perfect summertime read.

Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant, emotionally inept geneticist who decides he should have a wife and designs a scientifically valid survey to that end. Add Rosie Jarman, the intelligent, spunky bartender who has a project of her own; to find her biological father. Their combination creates an endearing and engaging, laugh out loud read as their quest for love in the face of challenge evolves.

It will make you want to drink (summer) cocktails!

Rodney Falconer recommends Life on Earth by Col. Chris Hadfield

What this book reinforced for me was that hard work and preparation are vital in what we do day in and day out. All of us have different levels of ability when it comes to learning. When it comes to hard work and preparation, all of us have the same opportunity. It really comes down to whether you are willing to put in the time and effort to be the best you can be, in whatever it is you do. My wife often says: "If you are going to do something, do it right". It does not matter how big or how small the task that you need to accomplish. You need to make sure you are prepared; you need to make sure you are willing to do the work that has to be done; and to make sure you do it right!

Lisa Graves recommends Make-Ahead Paleo: Healthy Gluten-, Grain- & Dairy-Free Recipes Ready When & Where You Are by Tammy Credicott

I've chosen a cookbook because cooking healthy and great-tasting food for my family has become such a big part of my daily life. Members of my family have different food intolerances, so finding recipes that everyone can enjoy has been challenging. I was so excited to discover the cookbook Make-Ahead Paleo. The recipes are simple and easy to follow and all have tasted amazing. There is also a terrific selection of dessert dishes! I especially love the tips the author gives for saving time by preparing ahead and freezing for later. I would recommend this book to everyone – you don't have to follow a paleo lifestyle to enjoy and benefit from the recipes inside.

Lira Lamaca recommends The Light Between the Oceans by M.L. Stedman

"Once a child gets into your heart, there is no right or wrong about it."

This is the tragic tale of Tom the lighthouse keeper and his wife Isabel. When a lifeboat suddenly washes on the shore containing a baby, a devastating choice is made that will forever change their lives. I loved this book. It is a deeply moving novel about right and wrong, guilt and innocence, love and duty. I am looking forward to the movie!

Meredith Mercer recommends The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy

I recently read this book and immediately went out and purchased five additional copies to "pay it forward" to friends and acquaintances. Although the title sounds like a self-help book geared towards income and success, the concepts of the The Compound Effect can be applied to all aspects of life. The principles taught in this book are simple but effective. Personally, I continue to reflect on this book to motivate myself to train for my next climb. Small (or not so small) daily efforts and decisions can contribute to long term success!

Carter Smith, summer student, recommends Training for the New Alpinism by Steve House & Scott Johnson

Steve House is the world's greatest alpine climber. This phenomenal new book is a training manual for climbers, but it is also applicable to other athletic pursuits. Exercise science is paired with anecdotal accounts of success (and failure) on the world's highest peaks resulting in a beautiful book that is both highly practical and interesting.
